Preservatives and safety
Understand the exposure assumptions and formulation limits in selected assessments of preservative ingredients.
A product appears here because its formula contains these ingredients. This is not a claim that the product works or a safety assessment of that product. Products are listed alphabetically.

- Phenoxyethanol
A published 2016 SCCS opinion supported preservative use up to 1.0% under the cosmetic-exposure assumptions it evaluated. This dated assessment does not establish current worldwide rules or guarantee tolerance of every formula.
- Potassium Sorbate
A historical sorbate assessment covers potassium sorbate using toxicology and formulation patch tests. Its conclusion is limited to the evaluated uses and concentrations and cannot rule out an individual reaction.
- Propylparaben
A paraben group assessment explicitly includes propylparaben and sets conditions on total paraben concentration. It is a scoped safety assessment, not a test of preservative effectiveness or current worldwide regulatory clearance.
Safety assessment
Amended Safety Assessment of Parabens as Used in Cosmetics.
- Sodium Benzoate
An updated benzoate assessment explicitly includes sodium benzoate and evaluates the described cosmetic uses and concentrations. It uses toxicology, exposure information and read-across; it does not guarantee universal tolerability.
