A closer look
What the research shows
Human research on a combination
Thirty participants with melasma entered a 12-week split-face pilot trial of 5% alpha-arbutin plus 2% kojic acid versus a triple-combination medicinal cream. Objective pigmentation outcomes did not significantly differ between sides; physician assessment favoured the triple-combination cream.
What this does not tell us
Twenty-seven participants completed the trial and all used sunscreen. The combination cannot isolate alpha-arbutin. Different application frequencies, a small sample and four weeks of follow-up do not establish equivalence or long-term recurrence prevention.
