About this ingredient: EU CosIng ingredient registry (via Open Beauty Facts taxonomy) ↗
- Anti-inflammatory
- Research category concerning reduced inflammation. A discovery tag does not establish that an ingredient treats inflammation at the amount used in a product.
- Antimicrobial
- A technical role associated with controlling microorganisms on skin.
- Tyrosinase inhibitor / brightening
- Research category for changes in pigmentation or uneven skin tone. The label does not establish that a finished product changes pigmentation.
- Buffering
- Helps resist changes in a formula's pH.
- Masking
- Reduces or conceals the formula's underlying odour or taste.

Registry functions describe possible formulation roles, not results for a finished product. A dictionary entry is not an approval or a safety assessment.
A closer look
What the research shows
Human topical research
One controlled study compared 20% azelaic acid cream with its vehicle in 92 people with moderate inflammatory acne over three months. Another compared it with 0.05% tretinoin in 289 people with comedonal acne over six months. Azelaic acid reduced lesions more than vehicle and had fewer local side effects than tretinoin.
What this does not tell us
The abstract describes double- and single-blind controlled studies without explicitly reporting randomisation. These results concern a 20% cream and diagnosed acne. They do not establish equivalent efficacy at a cosmetic concentration or for azelaic acid derivatives.

Research review checked Sep 30, 2026
Selected primary sources were reviewed for the existing research brief on 30 September 2026, with exact ingredient, route and combination limitations recorded. This was a bounded editorial review, not a systematic search.
Ingredient research is not proof that a product containing this ingredient works.
