What the research shows
Human topical research
A 12-week trial randomised 44 people to 0.5% bakuchiol cream twice daily or 0.5% retinol cream once daily. Both groups improved in measured wrinkle surface area and pigmentation, with no significant difference between them; retinol users reported more scaling and stinging.
What this does not tell us
The trial had no vehicle-only group, used different application frequencies and was small and short. Failure to detect a difference does not establish long-term equivalence or safety in unstudied populations.
