The ingredient, explained
Citric Acid
Citric acid has direct human research at a high topical concentration.
Ingredient guide
What it is and what it does
Citric acid can help control a formula's pH and bind metal ions that affect stability. It is also an alpha hydroxy acid. Its presence in an ingredient list does not establish an exfoliating effect, which depends on concentration, pH and the rest of the formula.

- AHA exfoliant
- Alpha hydroxy acid category. Exfoliation depends on the acid, concentration, pH and the rest of the formula; an AHA may also be used to control pH.
- Buffering
- Helps resist changes in a formula's pH.
- Chelating
- Binds metal ions that can affect product stability or appearance.
- Masking
- Reduces or conceals the formula's underlying odour or taste.

Registry functions describe possible formulation roles, not results for a finished product. A dictionary entry is not an approval or a safety assessment.
A closer look
What the research shows
Human topical research
Biopsies after three months showed thicker viable epidermis and more dermal glycosaminoglycans.
What this does not tell us
Histological endpoints and a 20% lotion do not establish benefits from low-level pH adjustment in another product.
