What the research shows
Human topical research
A 104-woman vehicle-controlled study tested an emulsion with 2% ectoin and assessed hydration, surface structure and elasticity, reporting an overall preference for the ectoin treatment. In 65 adults with atopic dermatitis, an ectoine cream performed similarly to a nonsteroidal comparator over 28 days.
What this does not tell us
The first abstract does not provide treatment duration or numerical endpoint effects. The second compared complete creams and did not include a vehicle-only control. These studies do not establish the effect of ectoin in another formula.
