What the research shows
Human topical research
A double-blind trial in 150 patients compared 14% gluconolactone lotion, 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion and the lotion vehicle. Both active lotions reduced inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions, with fewer side effects reported for gluconolactone than benzoyl peroxide.
What this does not tell us
The abstract does not provide duration or numerical effect estimates. This older trial concerns a particular 14% lotion and cannot establish equivalent outcomes for a lower-strength cosmetic or other polyhydroxy acids.
