What the research shows

Human topical research

In a 74-woman, 22-week vehicle-controlled trial, 8% glycolic acid cream produced modest improvements in facial photodamage. A separate 41-volunteer study reported improvements in texture and fine wrinkling after weekly five-minute applications of a 50% peel for four weeks.

What this does not tell us

The concentration, acidity, vehicle and contact time differ markedly between these studies. Peel outcomes cannot be transferred to a lower-strength daily product. One participant withdrew from the cream trial because of irritation.
