What the research shows
Human topical research
A 22-week, randomised, vehicle-controlled trial enrolled 74 women aged 40 to 70 and compared 8% L-lactic acid cream, 8% glycolic acid cream and their vehicle. The lactic acid group had modest improvements in overall facial photodamage, with some additional forearm improvements.
What this does not tell us
The paper tested the L form at 8% in a particular cream. A label does not disclose its acid form, free-acid level or pH. These results do not apply to injectable poly-L-lactic acid, which is a different material and route.
