- A technical role associated with controlling dandruff.
- Hair conditioning
- Improves cosmetic hair properties such as softness, shine or combability.
- Keratolytic
- A technical role associated with removing cells from the outer skin layer.

What the research shows
Human topical research
Fifty Indian patients with mild-to-moderate facial acne were randomised to six sessions of 30% salicylic acid or 45% mandelic acid peels over 12 weeks. Both improved overall acne scores without a significant difference; salicylic acid performed better on non-inflammatory lesions.
What this does not tell us
There was no vehicle-only group. Salicylic acid had more adverse effects than mandelic acid. A 30% peel is not evidence for the effectiveness or tolerability of a low-concentration cleanser or leave-on cosmetic.
