Papain degraded tight-junction proteins in keratinocytes and increased water loss and sensitization responses in mice.

What this does not tell us

Cell and mouse hazard study, not an incidence estimate in cosmetic users. Exposure conditions and enzyme activity matter; the study supplies no exfoliation benefit claim.
