What the research shows
Human topical research
Results are mixed. A 12-week, 5% gel trial in 23 women found no significant advantage over vehicle. Another 12-week trial analysed 100 adults using 5% tranexamic acid solution or 3% hydroquinone cream with daily sunscreen: both groups improved from baseline, without a significant difference between them.
What this does not tell us
The second trial had no vehicle-only group, lost 20 of 120 enrolled participants and compared different formulation types. It cannot establish equivalence to hydroquinone or overturn the negative vehicle comparison. These studies do not establish efficacy for every pigmentation concern or formula.
